Plan A Mardi Gras Party 

It’s that time of year again when organizations are planning mid-winter events for families, friends, coworkers and classmates. One theme that captures the imagination of many northerners suffering from cabin fever is the idea of a Mardi Gras Party filled with images of the warmth and excitement of New Orleans on Fat Tuesday.

Choose A Date 

Mardi Gras is traditionally celebrated on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent for Christians. A full day of celebrating is followed by the weeks of Lent leading up to the Christian celebration of Easter. This year Mardi Gras will be celebrated on March 4th, but that doesn’t mean your organization can’t choose a date around that time to celebrate the event in your own manner. 

Mardi Gras Decor, Colors and Themes

Customarily, Mardi Gras decor includes colorful costumes, masquerade-style masks, necklace beads, streamers and balloons. Decor also often incorporates the colors purple, green and gold as well as French-influenced fleur-de-lis patterns.

Floats are often an integral part of any Mardi Gras festivity, but decorated tables and surroundings can take the place of large decorations. Be sure to consider incorporating traditional New Orleans jazz for your music selections and banners that welcome everyone to the celebration of Mardi Gras. 

Food & Drinks 

Depending on the age and focus of your group, you may want to offer traditional foods found at a Mardi Gras celebration such as puffy fried dough squares covered in powdered sugar and served with coffee, popular Cajun and Creole dishes with flavorful sauces, Jambalaya and King Cakes. 

This festive day is also often celebrated with alcohol (if your attendees are over 21). Some of the favorites of Mardi Gras include Sazerac, Ramos gin fizz, French 75, Grasshopper and King Cake Martinis.
