How To Spread the Word About Your Fundraiser

Hosting a successful fundraiser for your nonprofit, school or organization is critical to raising much-needed funds for the services you provide. Promoting your fundraising event can be complicated, but attainable on a small budget.

Here are a few ways you can spread the word about your fundraiser without breaking the bank or taking away from the bottom line of your intended fundraising group.

Social Media Outreach

Many nonprofits rely on the free aspect of sharing events on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, Bluesky and others. Using eye-catching visuals, hashtags and easily shareable content, many organizations find that this is an easy way to spread the word about an upcoming event without investing too much money.

An even better way to encourage people to advertise an upcoming event is to ask followers to share the event and invite people they know on their personal social media pages to attend. This is free for those who have accounts on social channels and have the power to communicate quickly and efficiently.

Some organizations add a fun twist to using social media as a means to communicate fundraisers and the overall mission of the nonprofit/group. They offer a contest or giveaway related to the cause that will encourage people to try their hand at winning as well as spreading the word to people who may not have heard of your organization or purpose.

Community Outreach

Local communities have a way of coming together for service organizations running fundraisers. Try using community outreach such as putting flyers in local coffee shops, retail stores, and convenience stores. People from the community will have the opportunity to see the flyers during their regular shopping or dining and may spread the word on their own.

Online forums for local groups work similarly. Ask local organizations that align with your ideals if you can post on their sites to inform the community of your upcoming event.

Email Lists

Use your existing email contact list to send information out at regular intervals before your fundraising event. Encourage the people on your list to post about the event on their channels.

Add Event To Your Website

An easy step that many nonprofits forget about is posting their fundraising efforts on their own website. Be sure to add it to the calendar and spotlight it on your main landing page where all visitors will have a chance to see the information and download it to their calendars.

Local Media Outlets

Local newspapers, television stations, and radio stations welcome press releases announcing fundraisers that support the community. Be sure to submit pertinent information including the date, time and how to get involved.
